Welcome to our video series, innovators in Privacy Tech! At our global user conference in London, PrivacyTECH, we interviewed the best and the brightest minds in the privacy industry for their insights on everything from the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the future of privacy, how to achieve sustainability in your privacy program and more.

Today we have Manish Kumar, Group Data Protection Officer at Dyson. Dyson is a British technology company established in 1991. It designs and manufactures household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, bladeless fans, heaters and hair dryers.

Trust and the GDPR

Kumar notes that one of the biggest things beyond the GDPR fines for an organization that senior management should start thinking about right from the starting point is trust. Trust can be in a wide variety of roles. It can be from a consumer, who you’re selling your goods and services to, it could be from an employee perspective who are coming to work for your organization, or it could be your third party vendors or partners in whatever shape and form they interact.

“Trust is a very powerful tool.”

Kumar explains that he has seen organizations who have been able to build and demonstrate trust within privacy. He explains that a good example here is Apple, who has built on privacy and security in its business model. It has helped Apple go into new organizations who originally wouldn’t have considered Apple to be used in their organization for more than just providing a MacBook. It has opened up a new revenue source for Apple and has created a competitive advantage. Whereas there are other organizational examples where companies may have been a little less inclined on privacy or security, which has probably led them to suffer compared to some of the other competitors.
